Perfect advice. The scalpel should slice not just the unnecessary words but entire phrases or paragraphs or scenes that are not completely on point. One perfect word is worth 20 ho-hum ones. Thank you for this post.

Janalyn, enjoyed the post. I've yet to set a daily writing goal. It's one of those "can'ts" you mention. Time for me to change that. I've never been on a writing retreat, but I can still certainly identify with how easy it is to get distracted. I recently applied for the AmTrak residency. It'll be a retreat for me it I get it.

You should see that number grow to what you started with at conversion, if all goes well. If not, please use the link in my post to report a problem to Facebook. I think I answered this comment somewhere else online, but I'll say it again here. A short retreat can be valuable, however a longer retreat allows you to better immerse yourself in the experience. Thanks, Laura.

Last year, I borrowed my daughter's travel trailer & spent a week at the lake by myself. No TV, no internet, no pets & no husband...the most relaxing time I have ever had. I went in September so there wasn't much of a crowd. Without all the distractions, I was able to come up with several story ideas & outlines. It cost $120 for the campsite & I stayed 7 days.

What a great idea. I've done a writing weekend twice--once with a friend and once alone--but someday would love to do a longer retreat like you describe.
